Biogeochemistry of Trace Elements

The Biogeochemistry of Trace Elements group is studying the dynamic of metal and metalloid trace elements in the context of food and feed crop production.

The overall objective is to guarantee that feed and food crops comply with the regulation limits for their content in trace elements (TE) in relation with the environmental conditions including the climatic conditions and the agricultural practices. The scientific questions we address are :

Lavage de racine
  • The modeling of the stock and availability of trace elements in cultivated soils : partitioning of TE between the solid phase and the soil solution, speciation of TE in the soil solution including the complexation. Reactions are modeled both with kinetics and at equilibrium
  • The modeling of TE uptake by the root system and the partitioning of the TE between the different plant organs : relationship between uptake and root architecture, genetic variability for the different mechanisms of uptake and of partitioning.
  • The building of a model predicting the transfer of TE from the soil to the edible plant parts. Integration of the uptake and partitioning models into a crop model.

The main trace elements studied are Cd, Cu, Zn, Pb and the crops are wheat, sunflower, maize, lettuce...A significant part of our research is dedicated to calcareous soils and to the management of organic matter (crop residues, recycling of organic wastes).

  • Solubilization of TE from plant and soil samples by acid digestion (DigiPrep, microwaves digestions)

  • Trace element quantification by Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy (flame and graphite furnace)
  • Radioisotope tracing (109Cd, 65Zn,), certified laboratory and greenhouse, scintillation counting
  • Assessment of the physico-chemical availability of trace element in soils: sequential extractions, DGT, estimation of the soil/solution partitioning of TE by isotopic dilution, sorption/desorption experiments, estimation of TE speciation in the soil solution by chemical modeling and by a resin method
  • Cultivation of plants in nutrient solution in greenhouse with controlled climatic conditions and automatic nutrient renewal, one greenhouse for the use of radioisotopes.
  • Root architecture measurements by scanning the root system and image analysis (WinRhizo)
  • Xylem sap analysis (trace element and also sugar, organic and amino acids in collaboration with the metabolomic facility of the Bordeaux INRA research center)
  • Modelling and model analysis
