RESEARCH

My topic focuses on the study of interactions between Flavescence dorée phytoplasma and grapevine, in relation to varietal susceptibility.

The Flavescence dorée phytoplasma is responsible for a very serious epidemic vine disease that rages in Europe and causes significant losses. There is no curative control, the present means of compulsory control are based on insecticide treatments and uprooting of affected plants. Complementary methods must be developed. My strategy is based on the study of susceptibility / resistance mechanisms within the Vitis genus in order to identify sources of natural resistance that can be used in the long term for varietal improvement, and thus reduce vineyard inputs. To characterize the differences in susceptibility to Flavescence dorée within the genus Vitis, in terms of multiplication and diffusion of phytoplasmas in the plant, the Flavescence dorée phytoplasma is inoculated to different grape varieties and vine species through its natural insect vector Scaphoideus titanus. The gene expression and metabolism disturbances are then studied in order to understand the mechanisms involved.
